its not a dumb question i know i have asked it myself when i was young. no you don't have to buy stage one you can more or less look at stage 1, 2,3, and so on and so fourth as like levels. with clutches the higher the stage the stronger the parts are and the more power they will be able to hold. for instance stage one would be your typical daily driver not really to many upgrades on just about oem depending on the manufacture. however for most applications a stage 4 (or level 4) would be strickly for racing. if you had a stage 4 on your car you would hate life because it would take so much pedal work.
