"Street Racing Suspected in Fatal Citrus Heights Crash
Written for the web by Elizabeth Bishop, Internet News Producer

A driver was killed this morning when his car slammed into a tree during what police say was a street race in Citrus Heights. Police say the driver in the other car was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder.

According to witnesses, at about 10 a.m. a white Ford Mustang and a red Honda began racing up Auburn Boulevard. When the cars reached Van Maren Lane, they accelerated. At Cobalt Way, the driver of the Mustang lost control and slammed into an oak tree with such force the vehicle wrapped around the trunk.

The Honda continued on, followed by a witness, until police stopped the driver near Antelope Road and Sunrise Boulevard. Police detained and questioned the driver, 22-year-old Jason Antoine Golson of Citrus Heights. Golson was arrested and booked on second-degree murder charges.

The driver of the Mustang, 25-year-old Steve Skattebo, was killed. Skattebo was married with two children. A 17-year-old passenger in the vehicle, who is the Skattebo's stepbrother, was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Relatives indicated he may have a broken back.

Police and lawmakers are taking the problem of street racing more seriously. In January penalties increased for crashes in that result in injuries. Drivers convicted of racing can now face longer jail or even state prison terms.

The California Highway Patrol says the number of street races in Sacramento County is going back up after declining for several years. There were 227 street races in 2000. That number went down to just 87 in 2004 but went up to 102 last year"
