    Default im dumb. Wheel question.

ok, so im reading about the Scion cause i think i wanna get one. And the first thing i would want to do it change the wheels. Now the tC has a TPMS and at tire rack it says that u must install the senors on the new rims. Is this true, do u have to have the sensors on. Of course the TPMS wont work but i dont really need that. Will not having the senors on cause a warning light or anything to go off in the car anything like that or will it not affect the car.

    thanks

yes you will have to change them in order for tpms to work, i belive(ive never seen it my self personnaly) there is a valve in each tire that transmits psi levels to the ecu, you would have to swap those valves, any tire shop should be able to i believe

Not sure, by why would you want to give up that safety feature running low-profile tires?

As far as I know, the Tire Pressure Warning ECU is not tied into the main ECM other the Combination Meter - Vehicle Speed Signal Tire Pressure Warning Light. You will get a constant light as in referenced information below. Note: The transmitters record actual PSI of each tire and that information can be displayed with the Toyota Intelligent Tester on CAN diagnostic port DLC3. Now if only these OBDII/CAN Informeters would display that data, that would be very beneficial in racing.

When the tire pressure warning light does not go off,
or when it comes on during driving, check tire
pressure. If the tire pressure warning light comes on
within several hours after adjusting the tire
pressure, the tire may have a slow air leak.
    (b) Under the following conditions, the system may not
    function properly.
    • Facilities or devices that use similar radio
frequencies are located in the vicinity of the
    vehicle.
    • A radio device of similar frequency is used in the
    vehicle.
    • A large amount of snow or ice is stuck to the
vehicle, especially onto the wheels and around
    the wheel houses.
    • The battery of the sensor has been depleted.
    • The tires without tire pressure warning valve and
    transmitter are used.
    • Tire chains are used.
    • If any wheels other than the specified ones are
used, the system may not function properly
because interference may prevent the radio
waves from being correctly transmitted from the
tire pressure warning valve and transmitter.
    • Depending on the tire type, the system may not
function properly even though the specified
    wheels are used.

Just about anything that pops a code (MIL), Brake/ABS, or SRS light will fail you automatically at most inspection stations. I could see the TPMS light giving you the same results. Best bet is to get a cheap OBDII code scanner that will let you reset the MIL light. Reset the TPMS also just before you pull into the inspection station. The ECM operates on 2 trip logic. That means the MIL and the TPMS won't illuminate until the ECM sees a fault after 2 trips (trip defined as starting engine and driving 30MPH or more then engine shut off).
