    Default Double Din H/U Install

I have a 2007 tc and i really want to install a standard double din h/u but i'm not sure which one yet... definately an alpine though. My question is I want to install it without having to get rid of my door. I really like the door covering the H/U because it looks cool and more importantly it offers great theft protection because the double dins I'm looking at dont usually have removable faces. But all the kits I've seen just replace the door... HELP!

From personal experience, you'll need a head unit the recesses back far enough for the door to close, or modify the area in behind where the head unit rest. I have a JVC and it doesn't allow my door to close, but it doesn't bother me. I do know that people are using Pioneer head units and have great success w/ them and their doors are closing. You going to need to take measurements and go from there.

If your referring to a dash kit, yes there is. I do know that Scosche makes them, that's what I'm using. You may also want to check w/ CrutchField, they're pretty helpful as well.

Well, you can actually install a Double Din with the OEM brackets. Most holes will align. If need be, you can drill some holes thru the bracket. I can personally attest to the quality of Metra Electronic's products as I used to work for them in the mid 90's as a Sales Manager. What you will need is a Metra Dashworks kit # 99-8209 and a 70-1761 radio harness (70-8114 + ASWC for steering wheel controls). Scosche is off-shore Wal-Mart stuff.

Are you sure because i checked out their site and it looks like 95-8202 is more what i need? Since you are a metra expert maybe you can tell me if that will work? and I dont have steering wheel controls so the 70-1761 is all i would need right?

Correct on all accounts. The 99-8209 is the late model Toyota master kit that gives you more options but now I see that you don't need those options (double-din). The 95-8202 I is a kit (2 brackets) that I did not know they had. It most definitely will work for you and is much better as it utilizes the OEM brackets. That gives you a better chance that the new radio will fit behind the flip down door. The 70-xxxx series harnesses are to put aftermarket radio into the car harness so the 70-1761 is all that you need. The 71-xxxx series plug into the OEM radio. This allows you to reinstall the OEM radio back into the car after someone hacked the OEM harness from a previous install or theft. Also allows the radio to be installed into another vehicle. That provides the opportunity to sell your OEM radio to anyone with a double-din radio opening in their vehicle or, perhaps, on their golf cart.

Metra also produces a harness that plugs into the OEM harness at the speaker in a 72-xxxx series. 72-7901 would allow you to connect aftermarket speakers into the OEM harness. It makes it loads easier for door speaker installs to just use the OEM wiring in the doors then you would tap into the wiring of the 70-1761 radio harness. This makes the install fast, safe, and effective. The plus side is that if you decide to get rid of your car, it is a snap to uninstall your equipment and reinstall the OEM.
