Right Side CV axle Problem

    Default Right Side CV axle Problem

    I replaced the right front CV axle last week with a remanufactured one from NAPA on my 06 Scion tc because the bearing crapped out and the axle pulled out of the trans. Only a week later, the same thing happened, the bearing went and the axle came out again.

    What could have caused this axle to go so quickly? Or could it have just been a defective axle i got?

    Are you talking about the driver's side? Proper torquing sequence has to be followed so as to not put the axle bearing in a bind. This is called preloading. Without properly doing this, the bearing can end up not being fully seated causing binding and premature wear. Additionally, excessive torque on the nut (from using an impact instead of a torque wrench) will put too much clamp force on the bearing's races causing premature wear. What went bad on the axle? The axle cannot just pull out of the trans diff. There has to be room to pull it out which requires disconnect of the strut and the lower control arm ball joint from the axle bearing carrier to effect removal.

    Na its the passenger side. The bearing keeps going and this gives it enough room to slide out of the tranny. I torqued the 2 bolts on the bearing housing to spec. This is the third time on this car for me. I had the dealer do it the first time, that lasted a year and then I did it last week. Everything went together easily and I torqued everything to spec. THe only thing i can think of is the bearing didnt seat correctly. Im going to give it another shot and just make sure everything goes together perfectly. Should i have packed the bearing? It looked like a sealed bearing so i just installed it right out of the box.
    Also, is there a special gear oil i should be using in the manual tranny? I put in Castrol 75/90W. But that seemed to make my tranny not shift as good for the week it did run. Almost like it was to thin of an oil.

    No, grease packing, the bearing is sealed. Is the carrier bearing that bolts to the back of the engine block in good working order. That is the proper gear oil 75W-90. I use Royal Purple with Lucas Gear Oil Stabilizer in mine but the Castrol should be fine. It is plenty thick. Did you fill it till it began to pour out the upper plug?

    Are you sure that you seat the axle in the differential of the transmission fully? This can cause damage by binding the axle. What was the poor performance that you were experiencing?
