This is a discussion on weird sounds within the Engine Performance forums, part of the Scion tC category; has anybody experience a very loud banging sound when you drop gears quickly to take off?...

I am thinking i should do the same. the car is brand new and I finally reached 1000 miles so it is time to break it in a little more instead of so much babying. I am not sure if it is because of the seals breaking in a little but I would rather be safe than sorry. Let me know how you make out!

All I can say is that I babied the crap out of it until I reached 1000 miles and gradually I have started to open it up a bit and have noticed a few new sounds. I am sure it is because the engine is still new and evrything needs a chance to really break in, but then again this is this first brand new car I purchased. The same thing happens if I "chirp" second. The tiresd will squeal but then it is followed by what almost sounds like a bang. I am a little worried and a little disappointed. I hope that this car will be able to handle what I have in store for it. By the way is anyone going to the show on the 14th in Boston?

Yeah, I am starting to think that the cars have really soft motor mounts....one of my first mods this coming week after my appt thursday morning (7:45am ) is the Ingalls Engine Torque Dampener, seems to me like that mod will completely stop the problem but add some more vibration at the same time

Alright, I pretty much came up to the conclusion that it happens when you don't rev-match properly. Now that I have had the car for over a week I am having zero problems with that ever happening again. I am still getting used to the weirdly matched 1st-2nd shift...but doing great, and even when driving with some spirit zero problems......

P.S. I cancelled the appointment after I couldn't duplicate the problem.

I have not had the problem anymore either and I agree with your conclusion. Now I started with a sqeak with the radio cover. I noticed some others have had this problem and I iwll have have to try and use their methods the resolve this problem. Good luck and thanks for geting back to me!

LOL, funny that you said that because I started having the same thing, ...
Also, do you notice it is somtimes weird to get the car into reverse? if I don't do it perfect it doesn't want to go into gear for some reason??

I also started having the cold start problem that when you go into 1st gear the transmission makes a slight clunk sound....

I know all the problems are common except the getting it into reverse, I am gonna search a bit and see if I should take it in for that..

No I don't have any trouble getting it into reverse but sometimes I have noticed with manual transmissions, that you have to put the shifter in neutral, take your foot off the clutch, then try to put it in reverse. That usually works without a problem but it is a pain in the butt especially if there are people waiting on you. As far as the cold start problem, that is the first I hear of it. I would be a little concerned if that were me and I suggest taking it down to be on the safe side. I know earlier you said you have only a couple hundred miles on it, what about now? Is the engine broken in yet? Don't let them tell that it is normal, cause I have never run into that with any of the standards that I ever had. But then again, maybe it is a usual problem and I have been lucky. Regardless...good luck!

yeah, after hearing it today it seems more like a solenoid/servo/valve/actuator, more than a clunk....I know I have read up on the problem in ystc and scionlife, so I am not too concerned....but the reverse problem alone is pissing me off, so I'll take it in for that when I have time....

I still have less than 500 miles on the car....yeah,

I finally got the loud clunk sound to show itself again today, it definately is not as loud as I originally remembered, but it definately seems like it is the motor swaying too much....you have to do a really quick upshift and it does it...but during normal or spirited driving it's fine...

The clunk you are referring to, is that what we were discussing before? If so it only happens if I am really driving it hard, almost like I am racing. But it does not seem to do it as much anymore. I am not sure if it is because it is really breaking it in or if I am making it worse. But I have not noticed it all that often. You are lucky you are only at 500 miles. I am at 1400 and I have only had it 3 weeks. Damn I drive too much!

Alright, the loud clunk is officially FIXED!!!!

Thanks to the Ingalls "Stiffy"!!!! I used 2 layers of dynamat under the stiffy and it is Awesome..I am having some noise in the cabin due to the fact that the factory cowl doesn't fit too well with the Stiffy and DC Strut Bar, but that will be fixed soon....

    I am soo happy now

just to add to this thread.....my motor also had a very loud clunking noise....sounded like a very big bang as well.....but my car does have about 18,000 miles....well as i was saying, i found out that it was my back tranny mount that came loose and the bolt came out.....i have no clue how but i did take it to the tracks a couple of times.....just to let you guys know you should probably check your engine and tranny mounts just to see if anything is coming loose or has come out already....just a heads up
