new guy, first performance upgrade?

This is a discussion on new guy, first performance upgrade? within the Engine Performance forums, part of the Scion tC category; Refill the bottle..... I don't think nitrous (when done correctly) could cause any more damage to the 2AZ-FE any more ...

    Refill the bottle.....

I don't think nitrous (when done correctly) could cause any more damage to the 2AZ-FE any more than running an aftermarket pulley that has no harmaonic dampner on it. The cost of a nitrous kit is about 800 dollars and the cost of a supercharger is about 3,000.

well you're talking about having tons of money first off, and second off you had better reinforce the hell outta your engine, basically rebuild it to handle all that undue(if not unnatural) pressure.

A 55 shot of nitrous makes less hp then a s/c so it it's not going to do any more damage then a s/c would. Just upgrade the fuel persure, use colder plugs, use premium gas when squeezing the juice. Mad torque is the big advantage in a nitrous kit. Here is how nitrous works SEE. Anyone can mess up there engine if not taking the proper precautions regarless if it's nitrous or a supercharger. This guy with a blown-up engine and TRD s/c found that out the hard way Clicky click

you might want to take your own advice if you go force intucted too.

Just an update regarding the balancing of the motor.

Automotive Engineering International Online: Tech Briefs (July 2000)

[qoute]The forged steel crankshaft is fully balanced with eight counterweights and supported by five main bearings. A helical gear pressed in No. 3 counterweight drives twin contra-rotating balance shafts in the shaft housing within the lower crankcase. The balance shaft geartrain includes plastic Nos. 1 and 3 drive gears, meshing with steel gears. [/quote]

Clay if i were you, i would start out little by litte, i say get some light wheels like Volks, BBS, Enkei, etc. After that, you might want to get an I/H/E/P(Intake, Header, Exhaust, Pulley). If you're trying to race, those are your average bolt-ons, and you can probably beat an Si or keep up w/ it. After that you can decide what else you might want, but those can get you at 150whp+. Here is a combo i would suggest:

    Intake: Injen CAI
Header: Alphawerks or NEW Tsudo 4-2-1 coming out soon
    Exhaust: Tsudo Full Catback
    Pulley: Crank Pulley/ NST Pulley

Just putting in my two cents here guys. Prior to going FI, I had the MMW Headers/S-pipe, and the Weapon R SRI with the cold air box and a custom ram air setup. I dyno'd on a Dynapack hub dyno with this setup to get a base pull prior to my turbo tune, and I was at 166-168 hp at the wheels. I didn't have the rest of my exhaust opened up (unless you want to count a Borla axle-back). I know this doesn't add much to the nitrous and crank pulley discussion, but it may help a bit somehow. Later all

Every lil bit helps. Most guys and girls want just a few easy bolt-ons and that is it.

indeed, like i said TONS of money, but then again, if you have tons of money and do things right, you shouldn't need NOS. i view nitrous as a short cut, just my opinion. no worries, i'm not planning on making my daily work that hard, plus i do not have the money

I don't know if I would consider nitrous a short cut. Ask the N/A guys and they will tell you that FI is a short cut.... just depends on how you look at it.

If a nitrous system is done correctly, it shouldn't have any harmful affects to the engine. When its done incorrectly or abused.... bad things happen!

I have nitrous on one of my cars .... and I would say that it should only be used on a car that you plan to drag race (at a track!). I wouldn't waste my time or money on a system that I planned to drive daily.

bingo JRW, drag racing is one this, using nitrous to spray down an inter cooler is one thing, but jumping the gun and using it prematurely to turn lets say a 200hp car to gain that extra 100+ HP for a short while can have very bad repercussions if you haven't seriously done your homework for one, and extensive safeguarding to the engine second.
