I would suggest looking into Magnaflow, TRD or Borla Exhaust. I don't care for or like the sound of Fartcan/Cannister Mufflers, which you'll never see on my Scion tC. Those mufflers IMO are more for sound annoyance and nothing else, plus they spell RICE!

My TRD exhaust sounds really nice and doesn't drone on and on like a ricer when dip-setting down the highway. Although it does make a nice growl when I punch it. Kind of a mix between an Infinity FX and a Hyundai Sonata.

Previous member had suggested running a glasspack muffler as a resonator to give it a more Euro sound.

I would suggest the tannabe exhaust. The tannabe exhaust is one of the best aftermarket exhaust system without rice sound. It has a deep tone to it!
There are a lot of clips on youtube for tannabe exhaust. I personally had the TRD exhaust while friend had the tannabe medallion. I think the tannabe sounds better!
Thats easy, Borla all day is the best if you want a good sound but not anoying like these others.
I love my Borla cat back sound, not insanely loud unless your revving it up. So when going slow over a speed bump you don't get that loud I think I can I think I can thing.
what do you guys think about the hks or greddy exhausts
HKS I have heard on several vehicles its alright but its too loud for my liking. Greddy on the other hand I have also heard and sound less raspy, nice, deep, aggressive tone. I was looking at either the Greddy Evo 2 or PTuning, great sounding, smooth, deep tone. Just keep in mind that all the videos on Youtube aren't clear sounding, the quality isn't the best either. Ask Navylife about Youtube exhaust clips he can better explain it and how the quality isn't clear.

TRD sounds good but ive only heard it with no intake. I have a RL intake and a Magnaflow and i like the sound. Really quiet on low RPM's but once its up to 3k or so it sounds nice. Not too raspy either if non at all.
The performance gains from axle-backs between different companies are minimal at best. So with that out of the mix, you can concentrate your search to that of sound quality, dB level, looks, and fitment. The GReddy Evo 2 will sound a lil bit better than the traditional straight-flow round motors (fart cans). It is meant more for a car with a turbo. The looks are a bit lacking as I find it to be severely ugly. The TRD axle-back is about the best sounding one out there. It also sounds the best with an aftermarket header and s-pipe. In this configuration, it will have a plop-plop sound between 1st and second at certain throttle settings.

I have to agree, I listened to several Youtube clips on the Tanabe Medallion Concept G and I love how it sounds. I'm not really big on cannister mufflers, but I want the muffler to stick out the back, not horizontal like our OEM one is. I am so use to hearing HKS, Skunk 2, and Injen Mufflers and those are about the loudest ones, plus a lot of the young kids using them are deleting their CAT's, no resonators, and a 3'' exhaust on a N/A, hence the rasp " Ricey " sound.
The Tanabe Medallion Concept G will more than likely be my exhaust choice very soon.

TRD, they sound the best IMO
I like my TRD axle-back too. I gave it to my Son for his 2007 which I now drive.

I'm gonna have to throw in the p-tuning axle back
YouTube - ‪Ptuning 3" Axle-Back Exhaust on a 2009 Scion tC‬‏
sadly no video will ever do it justice
That is one good looking axle-back. They do good work.
So true about video shot on non-professional equipment such as camcorders, digital cameras, and cell phones. The only way to get a true representation of the exhaust sound characteristics is with a studio grade duplex microphone (we have two ears) in a controlled environment like a sound stage and one in a natural setting for comparison. There also needs to be a SEMA or ASE set standard for measurement like what was set forth in the car electronics industry.

I have the TRD exhaust on mine and it sounds good! BUT one thing you need to consider: The more you update your exhaust system, the more the sound changes. The TRD exhaust was very deep when I got my car... I then put on my Injen Short Ram and it got louder (more of the higher frequencies not low when I did this). The response was amazing... then I put on the additional pipe to make it CAI (still the same Injen) and it brought out the low end (getting to the farting sound with TRD) and it killed A LOT of what I had... not to mention it became WAY LOUDER. ANYWAY, took that crap off and went back to the short ram and installed the Megan 4-1 header (weapon r CEL) and it got louder on the high end. It sounds real nice now. I guess the moral of this story is: When choosing what you want in your sound, you must first decide what you plan to DO with it (in terms of h/i/e) BEFORE you choose your exhaust.

I am loving my Tanabe Medallion Concept G (Axle-Back). I am running a DC Sport 4-1 header w/ an Invidia 60mm Down-Pipe, the tone is awesome. During idle it purrs, under heavy acceleration the muffler really comes alive. I have noticed after the muffler is installed it is a little loud and there will be a little smoke, but that is because the fiberglass packing is breaking in. Once the muffler breaks in, which mine is starting to do now, the sound is much smoother/crisp and the tone is starting to come down.
I would also like to mention to anyone who is looking to buy this muffler for their tC's, if you have a rear lip, you will need keep the exhaust tip away from your rear lip, the tip gets very hot and it will burn/melt your lip. A buddy of mine found a very simple and easy trick that will bring the muffler tip down almost an inch away from your lip. Take a piece of rubber from an old exhaust hanger or a shredded tire, fold the piece of rubber in half and sandwich in the two exhaust hanger holes that comes w/ the Tanabe muffler. This action will lower the muffler tip down away from your rear lip, but also leaving a clean gap between the rear lip and muffler tip. If rasp is bothersome by having a header, get yourself a Moroso Spiral Flow Resonator or even two of them and have them welded into your existing OEM or Custom Mid-Pipe, this will help absorb, smooth out and reduce rasp.
Here is a before and after of what mine looked like:
