Unhappy We no longer have creativity...

I was just wondering if anybody on this page has actually made their own turbo set up without really depending on a premade turbo kit. What I mean is something like I thought out. There are many turbo cars in the world that already come with turbos, Intercoolers, Blow-off valves, etc and many time you can even swap MAF/MAP sensors if you do your research right. Has Anybody here made their own kit. What did you use? Did you modify and existing header and make a turbo manifold? Did you use a Welded in flex pipe as a Downpipe? I want to know who here has made something ghetto and have good results for the sake of performance and knowing you accomplished something on your own. Because that's what Im about to do. I have an 87 Mitsubishi Starion I will use its Front mount intercooler, TDO5 Turbo, modify my megan header to fit it, and send out my stock injectors to VENOM to get them flowing better, some junkyard blow-off valve off a Saab and go to an exhaust shop for the plumbing and some of the welding (if i cant find a welder). Among other things. Back to the Old school way of doing things!!!

Only ones that I know are the big guys like Jotech, ZPI (defunct), Dezod, Greddy, and the like. It should not be a problem building your own kit. The turbo manifold is the one part not to skimp on. There are too many out there that crack and even fail.

For injectors, check out Deatschwerks. They have larger injectors that are direct OEM drop-ins. I have their 550CC set.

Unless you have access to high industrial equipment to create your own exhaust manifolds, and other fabricated parts, it's just the way the game is played.

But personally, the set up of the car doesn't matter too much. How one drives it, is more important. =D

But I definitely do know how you feel.

A guy in the Delaware Scikotics with me made his own turbo setup. He used a mitsubishi turbo, and didnt even run an intercooler or engine management and didnt even get a tune and he was pushin 300whp until he blew his engine cuz of hi oil pump NOw hes rebuilding and his goal is 600 whp. Cant wait to see what he has in store.

300whp without any type of cooling, not even h20/meth works?

There should be absolutely no surprise that he blew his motor. That just totally fubars A/F ratios and limits power.

oh i know. I think he secretley just wanted to blow it lol. Hes a mechanic and knows a lot about cars and engines, and idk how he came to the conclusion of not running an I/C or water meth or any of that.

    Wink

nice, thats what I was thinking of doing at first. Just buying a manifold putting a TD05 turbo and just running a pipe to the intake with no intercooler. Then just upgrade the injectors and invest in like a AEM Fuel/ignition controller and wallah!!! Cheap turbo upgrade!

when you drive a saturn... fabing up your own turbo system is the only option you have LOL. There are several guys on the ion redline forums that fabbed up thier own turbo systems, even a couple that kept the eaton and pieced togeather/fabricated thier own twincharged systems. the origional twincharged ion redline was built back in 2004 before we had any tuning options at all, thier solution was a second fuel rail with an extra set of injectors that were controlled by a secondary fuel system. it was pretty amazing b/c it kept the drivability of stock injectors/fuel system/tune, but was still capable of supplying enough fuel up top.

of course since then larger injectors and tuning solutions have been made available, so thats not how i would go about it today, but it was amazing that sombody pulled it off at the time. between the blower and the turbo i think it was boosting 24 psi, and made some 360-370 fwhp, and about the same torque.

that sounds familiar... i think i posted pics here before of my melted piston. 19 psi on stock internals wasnt such a good idea

hes right though, your gonna want some kind of charge air cooling system, wether its an air/air ic, water/air ic, or meth injection, youll need somthing.

Just remember the fundamental rule of A/F ratios and forced induction:

    Cold Air = Good

Super heated, ultra hot air = Bad Bad Bad
