06 Scion TC A/F Repair question
Hey guys, long story short my fiances uncle works at a mechanic shop usually gives us good deal. Her check engine light was on so she took car in to see what was up.

425 dollars later, she find out the ACD A/F ratio sensor needed to be replaced.
The invoice was broken down like this

    260 - sensor part
    15 shop supplies
    94 - ECU scan
    122 - Labor

    28 A/F Remove and replace
    Total 425

Is that way of base or about right? Im gonna call scion and ask tomorrow but i almost hit the floor when she said 425 for an A/F sensor. What you guys think?

First question, how many miles are on the Scion tC? Second question, did anyone try to clean the MAF sensor? Nothing says you have to buy the MAF sensor from the dealership, you have the option to buy one from AutoZone, Advance Auto Parts, NAPA..etc, unless this is a dealer item only. IMO, $425 dollars seems a bit steep, I would look online for a DIY on cleaning or replacing the sensor, save yourself some money.

As most people know the dealership is going to be higher in price, and they are out to make money. Some dealerships/mechanics are so bad they will tell you that something is bad to make a few bucks when in turn the part that was supposedly bad wasn't to begin w/.

Hope all goes well for you guys and let us know how you made out.

Its actually from the shop her uncle works at which is why shes always gone. Its her mom's brother so i never usually worry either cause i never thought they would rip of us. But freaking 4xx seems insane for an a/r sensor, she went it cause her check engine was on, then her uncles shop did the work and all w/o asking her or telling her what issue was. We never got a chance to even look around. He didnt do the work himself but he works at the shop

on the reciept it says ACD AIR FUEL RATIO Sensor, is that different then the standard a/f sensor?

I was googling it trying to find the part and it seems average cost is around 1xx ....

Side note next to Scan Test Computer -
MIL IS ON, Performed Engine code test p0012 p0031 p2195 were set in memory tested a/f ration sensor bank 1 sensor 1 Heater circuit and sensor signal for excess lean condition needs new sensor.

I know there is a sensor on a CAI and as well as one on the exhaust manifold/header and another before/after the CAT converter. If its a o2 sensors, those I do know from experience run from $60-$150, plus I use to work for Autozone so those never were cheap. It sounds like that is what the problem is, but I am no mechanic.

Just like headlights when one goes bad, you change them in pairs, same goes for o2 sensors.

I would say get a second and third opinion and estimate before you shell out any money. I would also buy the o2 sensors from an autoparts store which a lot cheaper than the stealership. Lastly autozone, advance auto and other autoparts store will do a free OBII scan free of charge. IDK, if you are aware of this or not, but I have what is called a ScanGauge II in my Scion tC that is mounted ontop of the steering column and one of its cool features is it scans your OBII port, gives you the PO Code and will clear codes as well. Plus the ScanGaugeII also works as gauge (Air/Fuel Ratio, RPM's, MPH, Fuel Mileage, Volt Meter and other cool options. I would invest in one: ScanGaugeII - Trip Computers + Digital Gauges + Scan Tool. I picked mine up on Ebay for about $20.00 less than what Scangauge themselves charges.

I hope everything works out for you and if you have any other questions or concerns, just ask.

Never mix family with business is the old adage. $45 to scan the ECU (ECM on our cars) when most autoparts stores like Autozone will scan you OBDII port for free. The cost of the part sounds about right as there is always a mark-up from the jobber price. The guy has to make a profit somewhere. That is just part of doing business. The Bank1Sensor1 that is on the exhaust header is very expensive and the Bank1Sensor2 in the s-pipe is about $150-200. What is DTC code that was scanned?
