    Default Gas cap issue

Ok a few days ago my cel came on so I went to auto zone and got my code p0456 the next day my wife took my tc to Toyota and showed them the code they sed it was the gas cap I got off work to find Toyota didn't check anything so feeling I got cheated on a true check by Toyota I take it back to them and ask for them to run there computer on it to see if autozones is accurate well they did and there code was p0441 455,456 and the tech tells me that an aftermarket cap won work and that I have to buy the Toyota brand one I told him the truth I didn't have the money to pay for the cap and computer scan and il get the cap later I already own a new stant gas cap for my tc. Is it true that after market caps won't work or is Toyota just tryn to get a sale this Stant looks good and feels good on the seal I know that the Toyota one is 8 $ more its just that I already have this new one and want to use if it work and not have to spend the extra $ if Toyota was blowing smoke ttyl

After market gas caps will work just fine on our tC's as long they make a proper seal. The (Stealership) is good for talking people into their products, which are generally more expensive anyhow. Stant makes the best gas caps to the best of my knowledge. Once the gas cap has been replaced, tightened till you hear it click, you need to drive the vehicle to reset the ECU. The reason gas caps fail is due to a bad o-ring, another reason is due to not aligning the cap and making a proper seal.

Approx 10-15 miles should reset the ECU. The dealership I work for is Miller Honda/Hyundai and I have to drive vehicle all the time to reset monitors, in most cases 20 miles on average will reset the monitors. I would take your tC for a drive, pull over someplace, turn the ignition off for 2-3 mins and the restart it and drive back.

Pick yourself up one of these next time your online: ScanGauge II

    Link - http://www.scangauge.com/

This small and compact computer will give you a digital read out of your MPG, MPH, RPM's, Voltage, and other areas you wish to monitor. It also offers a color changing face, and will diagnose any CEL you have and will clear it. The unit plugs right into your OBD-II. With this unit you can save yourself the hassle of taking your tC to the auto parts store for a CEL and will monitor your vehicle in other ways that are not displayed on your tC's OEM gauge cluster.

I wouldn't suggest taking the cap off and leaving it off, that will allow for evaporation and moisture to accumulate. Instead, before you leave, take the cap off, then screw it back on till it clicks, no more than 3 turns. Start the vehicle and drive, this should reset the ECU and clear the CEL.

You can try taking the cap off while the car is running and then re-installing it. After you re-install it, I would drive it.

A week are you serious? I had this happen to me once since I have owned my tC, my issue was due to not screwing the gas cap on tightly. I took the cap off and put it back on and the light went off the following day.

I doubt a new cap would still be keeping the light on. Have you tried disconnecting the battery for a couple hrs? Try that and see what happens. If you still have the CEL on, I would lead to believe you have more issues than just gas cap.

i would like to self test my evap system with some kind of smoke but i dont know what to build to do it i did read that rust could cause the cap to leak but i saw no rust il prolly put some rubber friendly lube on the rubber seal and see if it seats and leaves a good seal

The gas cap is an integral part of the Evaporator Emissions System. The cap has a seal and is tested by Emission Control Stations for proper seal. It is possible to have a fuel tank cap that does not provide a good enough seal. Lever type gas caps tend to fail those tests.
