Default new guy, auto or manual tranny?

Hello my name is Josh. I am 17 years old and I am looking to get a tC within the next month. I have test driven the automatic, but not the manual. The main reason for getting it is due to college as I will be 3 freeway hours from home as of next fall. My first and current car is a 88 toyota 4runner with a 5 speed tranny so manual transmission isn't new. I was curious if it'd be smarter to get the automatic over the manual transmission? I didn't plan on adding much right now possibly exhaust and intake once I get it, but maybe the bug might hit me and later I might want to throw some more power options in. What would the best tranny be to get? Thanks a lot.

Josh

Any reasoning behind it? Don't doubt you just doing the research. Thanks.

1. Every time I had a car with an auto in it. I just got bored of the car and really wished it was a 5spd.

2. Cheaper to fix:
I had an auto civic and i had to get the trans repaired. it cost way too much so i ended up doing a 5spd swap.

Ok ya that makes sense. Now I am used to the 'ol long stick of my 88 4runner, how does it differ to the short throw of these new trannies? Guess I will have to test drive one soon. Thanks a lot.

I have an Auto. I only got it because i do a lot of stop start driving. I should have gotten the 5spd. Test drive one with the short shifter if possible. they're real nice. I'm stuck with my auto now tho....

too much. talk to carboncrazytc. He was in the same boat youre in. He had a s/c auto tC and wound up trading it in for a 5spd then turboing it.

Idk depends how much $ you put into it already. Do you have any Aftermarket parts on it?

Youre gonna take a loss on the car but idk how much. I thought about trading mine in, but instead of taking a loss, I supercharged it. Well worth the money. but if you want a 5spd really badly then go ahead and trade it in.

Definitely go for the 5-spd. They are way more fun to drive and girls like a guy that can drive a manual. Automatics are boring.

My parents are whack and did not let me have a manual. I should have gotten one though. Maybe I'll trade it in for a 5spd in a year or 2.
