Unhappy Is my tc totaled?! :( plz check this out

Hey everyone, I have some horrible news. Last night (12/18/08) at around 11:30, I got t-boned by a drunk driver. Luckily, she hit the front right of my car (driver side wheel well) and it took most of the force of the hit. I was making a left turn at a stop sign when she attempted to pass me on a 2 lane road. She hit me, a witness behind us said my vehicle spun 360 degrees and the vehicle traveled forward about 50 feet or so before stopping. I was okay, however the driver of the other vehicle had to go to the hospital with mild injuries. I just dont understand why people feel the need to drive when drunk. I hope justice will be served, and her license revoked. This is currently the only picture I have of the accident, I need to upload the rest. Would anyone happen to know or have any idea if my insurance company will total the vehicle?

When I entered the vehicle, I was able to shift throughout all the gears without the clutch being opened. The front bumper on the passenger side was barely hanging on. I will upload more pictures of the other vehicle and more of mine. What do you guys think? Is "Simon" the Scion totaled?

honestly, it all depends on the insurance company. Is the frame bent?

Shows how tough the tC is. Glad that you weren't scratched. Simon is not a total loss and can be easily repaired. The Scion maintenance manual as all of the specs on the frame and body sections so those repairs are that much easier for a frame shop. With all of the parts the insurance company will most likely settle by declaring it as a total loss. Unless you have done alot of modifications that can't be easily removed, this is a win situation for you to get a new tC.

Don't feel to bad for the insurance company though. It is a win-win-win situation for them. They get to declare it as a loss in their Federal taxes, sell the car for parts at auction, and have the extreme pleasure of raising your rates (your fault or not). If I had the money, I would buy your car for my project car.

    Parts list.

Alittle off-topic, but how would the TC hold up in a rollover? I would be worried about the glass everywhere...

No worries. I have seen a few tC's that were climed rollovers. There was little damage to most of them with one that had all the windows shattered. It is all safety glass so it will fracture into a 1000 little cubes. No one was even injured in that accident.

Another piece of info, in case it isn't already known, is that this is a perfectly reason why drivers shouldn't turn the steering wheel with the one-handed-through-the-middle-of-the-streeting wheel-manuever. The reason being, if someone were to do that and then be struck by another car in the wheel well, the force of that collision could send the wheel careening in the opposite direction and that change of direction would cause the steering wheel to spin with it, thus seriously damaging the driver's arm.

I'm not saying you did that or do that, just wanted to point that out, in hopes people like my sister will stop (which she won't, no matter what I say, it drives me crazy).

Good safety point. It is these little what if scenarios, when thought out ahead , could prevent harm. In the Navy we call it ORM. I nominate you for Scion OSHA representative.

UH-OH. Me and OSHA don't get along. Are you going to raise the speed limit? Then I would be all for it lol.

    What does ORM stand for?

And, if I were to be nominated, do I get the cool necklace that every incumbent had in the movie idiocracy?

It was a failed quip in response to the "nomination". To understand it you would have to watch and enjoy that movie.

Well, I was vaguely referring to that, but I was mostly talking about Navy's ORM thing lol. The quip did not fail. I have not seen the movie, but I take it that it is funny.

    ORM- Operational Risk Management

5 Steps to minimize the risk in any task.
    1. Identify the hazards
    2. Assess the hazards
    3. Make risk decisions
    4. Implement controls
    5. Supervise

Scenario making use of ORM skills
    1. Asking a woman that you had just met, "When is the baby due?". Is she sport'n a baby bump or just plain fat.
    2. You offend her, get socked in the eye, and now on every woman within 100 miles shiite list. Awkward!
    3. Earn cookie points for getting it right or be the scurge of the county?
    4. Fix your gaze upon her eyes and give a quaint , "Hello". Do not! I repeat, do not look at her belly! If you do, this will have her waiting for you to put your foot in your mouth. If the compulsion is too great, then fein a convulsion on the floor.
    5. Did the paramedics come and put a piece of rubber in your mouth? No? Then you are safe to fight the X chromosome another day.

    Cool Shes Done...

I just got off the phone with my insurance company.

What a lovely christmas gift...my baby is totaled Its a bitter sweet victory as I get a new car, but I lose the first TC I had. My insurance company is phenomenal, theyre called New Jersey Manufacturers. Theyre giving me the highest value for the car, sales tax, and I get back my deductible from the womans insurance. Also, they are paying for my medical bills from the hospital, and the chiropractor. My cell phone (an iphone) was also destroyed in the accident and they are also paying for that. I want a new tc, but im going to go from dealer to dealer to get the best deal possible on a new one. Its a buyers market so hopefully I can pick one up dirt cheap. If not I was thinkin about this one:

    Check Her Out

Obviously I wouldnt dream of paying that much for it, id argue it out with them that the price needs to be lower.

Anyone think this cars a good deal or im just better off buying a new one?

And to the previous thread (sorry for not quoting it) I DO NOT make turns with my hand through the steering wheel or the exact safety reason mentioned. Its those little things that can be the difference from a scratch free accident and one that you need to go to the hospital in the ambulance.

So to sum it all up, Ill miss "Simon" dearly, but its time to move on.

My condolences for Simon. He gave his life to save yours. You have the 1 and 20 good ending story with insurance companies. Bully for you.

Best of luck trying to negotiate a better price on a used tC. Scions are one of the few cars that keep their value, especially for the under $20,000 market. New Scions are Pure Price so there is no negotiation there. We have a member selling a tricked out 2008 with a built motor and S/C. It is in the Classifieds.

    Default Holy Sh*t

So uhh, remember that whole "YAYYY MY CAR IS TOTALED!" ordeal? Well, I wanted to post this when it happened, but I never got around to doing it I was just too upset. The insurance company sent me the paper work to being filling out for a totaled car because we sent our representative photos of the vehicle and she figured it was totaled. About a week later (early january) the adjuster calls. The car isnt totaled. He claims there only 4-5k worth of damage done do it. I think he is totally wrong. When my front bumper was cracked, it cost 1500 to fix just that. Its in the shop now though, and we got a call from them. They said they need to bring the adjuster back in and talk to him because there was, and I quote "additional damage not previously assessed." I dont know why theyre doing this..i just wished the totaled it...oh well..

Well, I know you want the car totaled, but look at it this way. The shop called you to tell you there was some damage the adjuster didn't see the first time. That shows me that the shop is pretty good and they actually care for the customer instead of being blinded by dollar signs. Good luck and keep us updated.
