I used to run Mobile 1 and noticed it had a pretty high burn off rate. Once I switched to Mobile 1 EP the consumption dropped by 90%, I was amazed.

I've heard bad things about Mobile 1 not being what it used to be and losing many of its ratings due to a change in formula to increase profits. However, as far as synthetics go, it is stupid cheap. The boosted tC seems to like it. (60k total 24k boosted) Mobile 1 since 3k

I'll find out a little more once I get my oil analysis back from Blackstone.

I always buy it at advanced auto when it goes on sale it's great.

$30!!! for 5 quarts Mobile 1 EP & Mobile 1 Oil Filter (their filters are excellent for the tC)

Usually the Mobile 1 EP goes for $8.99 a quart and $10.99 for the filter!

I own a 2006 Scion tC, that I bought back in November of 2007. The mileage was 11,300 at the time of purchase and I have a tad over 20,000 miles now. I swear by using a full synthetic oil like Mobil 1 for ex. Since your Scion tC is new and has very low miles, I would suggest going with a full synthetic oil (5w 20 or 5w 30), but no thicker. Mobil 1, Ams Oil, Royal Purple, Castrol Synthetic, Castrol Edge, Vavoline, and Quaker State are all good oils to use.

Of course you going to pay more going with a synthetic oil verses a conventional oil. The advantage of a synthetic oil is you'll gain better performance and gain a few MPG. Also with a full synthetic oil, you don't always have to change your oil every 3,000 miles. Some oils allow you to change at 5,000 miles, but its all going to depend on how you drive. Some people change at 3,000miles and others change at 4,000-5,000 miles. Its my understanding that with most full synthetic oils and the technology that's involved in manufacturing, its really not necessary to change the oil at 3,000 miles, but everyone has their opinions on this.

As far as an oil filter goes, I use and also swear by K&N. I like knowing that my oil is getting filtered better than your everyday OEM filter, but that is just me and my opinion as well. If you going to use an oil filter, stick with: (K&N, Mobil 1, TRD, Purolator, Wix, or Fram).

You can also add Lucas to your engine oil as it counts towards one of your quarts. Lucas makes awesome products and will not harm or void any vehicles warranty.

Don't slack on warming up your car when the engine is cold. Let the oil warm up and thin out before pressing on the gas. Thick oil doesn't do jack **** to lubricate your parts.

    A couple points...

The only difference between conventional and synthetic motor oil is particle size. It's still the same chemical composition; synthetic oil is engineered to have smaller, regular-sized particles. This increases heat absorption and dissipation and improves lubrication. You should always drain as much oil out as possible, but the two types may be mixed with no harmful side-effects.

According to the mechanics at my local toyota dealer, the best oil filter is the OEM. It has a reservoir that supplies oil to the pump right away, minimizing the dry time before the pump builds pressure. If you want to do your own oil changes, talk to the dealership parts guys. I did this and they gave me the filters to do the first three.

Good info to know. The article was a little repetitive with the pre-chapter highlights like it was a weekly sitcom.

Can you please explain why AMSOIL is the best? They are the most expensive and, if memory serves correct, the first true synthetic on the market.

I have used both Mobil 1 5w20/5w30 Full Synthetic and Castrol Edge 5w20 w/ Lucas Oil Stabilizer (Full Synthetic) w/ no issues and my engine runs/performs great. Our very own NavyLife59 (Scott) will recommend Royal Purple, right out of the great state of Texas, although me personally, I can't see spending that much for 1qt of oil, especially since I don't race my tC everyday, its a daily driver, although from what I have heard from Scott, the RP really smooths out the engine and takes away that annoying ticking sound our VVTi's are known for.

Amsoil has a product that is call XL--It's rated for 10,000 mile between oil changes. I used XL in my old car and changed the oil every 8,000 miles and I was surprised that the oil still had a little color in it. Far from burnt black oil like everything else. That's all I use. Amsoil 100%

That stuff is so uber expensive. I can barely afford to put RP in 4 cars.

But what would I do with all of the free time that would create? Hey. Some people have a pair of underwear for everyday of the week. I just so happen to have almost enough to drive a different vehicle to work each day.

BTW. I actually have 5 vehicles. You forgot the hot rod sitting in my Mother's barn.

I agree with Flint. I always use Royal Purple and a K&N or a royal purple filter. I swear by this stuff and will tell you there's a noticeable difference when you put it in. To each his own buttttt...... Royal Purple hands down
