Studs are great. Use on ice. Chains are for deep snow.

Give yourself plenty of room in front of you. tCs have ABS, so go ahead and keep your foot pressed on the brakes. If it pulses, it's doing what it's supposed to do. Maintain momentum when traveling uphill. Without it, you'll start sliding backwards.

Winter driving is a whole other ball game. First you need a good all-seaon tire or snow tires. All season tires work well but in deep snow you'll want a snow tire. I would suggest Blizzaks or Cooper snow tires. Studded tires also work very well. For every 10mph = 1 car length distance, in heavy rain or heavy snow, low visibility conditions, increase your following distance to allow for stopping. When going up hill or down hill, use a lower gear to help slow you down or to keep your torque up. Pumping the brakes verses slamming on them will also help you to stop w/o going into a skid/slide. Also when sliding/skidding, turn into the slide/skid and DO NOT HIT THE BREAKS! Maintaining proper air pressure in all 4 tires will also help you get around. Tires tend to lose more air pressure in the winter than summer due to contracting and the fluctuation in air temperature. A good rule of thumb is to keep/maintain air pressure (PSI) between 32-35psi. When you add more weight to the vehicle (towing, hauling, more passengers) ex. increase PSI. When in question, refer to the sidewall of the tire for proper inflation.

The ABS system will be your best friend if you use it properly.

Just one minor correction. The sidewall of the tire only gives you the max load and max p.s.i., when looking for proper air inflation refer either to your owner's manual, or the inside of the driver's side door jam.

    hahaha! Ugg boots....

Anyway, this past winter was my first with the tC. I got a set of 4 studded snow tires and they're well worth the money you put into them. I swear they could get you through anything (snow related, of course)
