Speaker space for a sub - go with a box. May not win IASCA or HIN points but whocares. You want your car to be functional and leave it at that. I, personally, am a big fan of the OEM Pioneer radios. They are by far the best radios I have ever seen on an entry level car. Shoot, it out does most of the Ford Premium and Chevy Bose systems that I have worked on. You probably have the IPOD hook-up so that is a big plus. You could forgo a sub and have your door speaker pods reworked to encompass the map pockets. This will provide ample space for some large displacement 6.5" mid-bass speakers and perhaps a 51/4" mid-range as well. If you don't want to go that extensive (expensive) route, then I suggest 6.5" subwoofers under the front seats in custom enclosures and leave the stock speakers alone. You could also run the speakers as a mid-bass (if your not into low Hertz music) by running a 12db 90Hz low bandpass filter and just let the seats naturally filter out the high frequencies. This will produce the sweetest drum beats.
NOTE**** Higher end speakers require higher RMS power to match the sound output of your more efficient OEM speakers. In other words, unless you are planning on power your door speakers with an external amplifier of atleast 50watts RMS 1W/1M, then don't replace your factory speakers. These factory speakers can handle more power than you think if you filter the sub-bass harmonics out of them. Welcome aboard.

Part of my post failed to post so here is the rest.
The point that I was making about amplifier power levels is this. Simply stated; it is better to have to much amp power then not enough. A good Installers rule of thumb is drive a speaker with an amplifier that is more than equal to it's RMS rated output by atleast 25%. In other words, if a speaker is rates at 50Watts RMS, then drive it with an amplifier capable of 66.5Watts RMS. For subs you want to look at up to 50% higher. The reason is this; to overdrive an amp to push a speaker towards its max actually overloads the amps capacity. This causes distortion and really heats up the amp. Now driving the same speakers with a more powerful amp allows you to turn the gains and boost levels down, thus allowing the amp to run more efficiently. With overhead there is less distortion.
