    Default Declaration of Intent-Nicks tC

Its been a while since I have been active...I had some trouble moving for school and such but now I am back and all goes well.

I still plan to set the car up as a moderate road racing conversion. I already have the TRD Lowering Springs, Hankook K6 Tires, TRD Black Chrome Strut Bar(Im proud of that black chrome ) in the performance aspects and because I am a single guy going to college it has to look good...HID Kit and Silver(Not chrome there is a difference) 18" Wheels and custom interior glow kit with shiny blue LEDs.

The lord blessed me by allowing me to move to an area with alot of twisties, fun in the car and on the bike . The next couple mods are more out of necessity than anything as I plan to get a new brake setup(Only pads for now, and maybe new fluid) and new tires, the hankooks are awesome but after 40k miles of highway driving and my "Spirited" driving sessions with friends they are starting to bulge and need to be replaced. I am still not sure where I stand in the turbo v supercharger debate for the tC but I want some more usable power in the tC...also doing some research into a way to stretch fifth gear out some...dont feel I need a short shift kit as the tCs throw isnt very far anywas. I am staying away from the go juice(N2O) due to a bad experiance I had with it when I was younger and much braver.*

Thats all for now, hit me up on facebook...but please send a message letting me know who you are since I dont know many of your faces yet. Bigblueboom@hotmail.com

Just got some Nitto Neogens.....im in love with them. Did some minor tweaking, played with the timing a little bit...but immediatly changed it back and upgraded the plugs. Nothing really major. I havent had much money which makes it hard, especially since I dont believe in Credit Cards for anything other than an absolute emergency.

In what ways were tweaking with your timing? What were the results that you were getting?

Going back and forth a notch on the adjustable pulley that was already installed on the car, I didnt really have a way to watch it that closely but It started to sound like it was having trouble, and actually died when I moved it backwards one notch, so I checked the spark plugs and they were burnt to the tip. Moved it back to where it was and replaced the plugs. Wish I could say it was more than a curiosity thing but thats all it was, I just had alot of time to wonder "What if..."

True...but I thought maybe they were on to something. I got it from a Carmax for a steal and it had a few thing already done to it...the pulley set was one of them. I was pissed when I got the lightweight pulley did all the work to get it installed only to find that lo and behold there was already aftermarket equipment down there. and since I am still learning about cars (especially valvetrain) I figured I would play with it and see what happened. I found out that is an EBAY brand from a local tuner. Im actually not sure what to do with it now, but the car is running just fine so I left until I could check into it more. but taking your reaction into account, I am beginning to get worried.

Being Ebay I would be more worried about it failing to hold a setting causing incorrect valve settings.

So this is something I need to worry about? I have a few bucks to spare on parts right now. My friend in Crestview said he could get an OEM pulley on for about 100$ baring unexpected labor. Now you have me worried about it because I plan to be moving up north after I finish my AA degree at the end of the semester and driving from Pensacola, FL to Greenville, NC takes alot out of a car.

Streets, let me quantify something here as I think we are talking about two different pullies.

I have been referring to what I understood you to earlier state that you had an adjustable cam gear which is assumed on the exhaust cam. What you seem to be referring to know sounds like the crank pulley as in a lightweight replacement to the OEM dampner cast iron one.

    1. Any adjustable cam gear is a bad idea on just about any ECM adjustable (VVT-i/VVTi-L/VTEC) cam angle system, unless, it is a fully blueprinted (built) engine that is engineered for this.
    2. LW crank pullies have proven to be very reliable and not damaging to the 2AZ-FE. However, there have been failures of pullies from non reliable brands. NST and Agency Power pullies have proven themselves. Please read this stickied discussion for the full details.

Once again...you are correct. I was using precarved notches in the gear to adjust it, but from what I am reading here there shouldnt be any notches but after addtional google research I was looking at the crank pulley....now im even more confused?

There is nothing to adjust on a crank pulley. You access it by removing the passenger wheel and mud guard. Held on by a large bolt. Cam gear is accessed by removing the valve cover. Suffice to say, yours is a crank pulley. There is sometimes a notch on it denoting either TDC (Top Dead Center) or BDC (Bottom Dead Center) on the crank stroke of the #1 cylinder. This is for setting the correct cam angle in correlation to timing.

So by adjusting it all I was doing was aligning it to TDC and BDC?

You don't do anything. The crank pulley aligns to the crank by means of a key way. It can only go on one way. Now, if you don't install the key, which is separate from both the pulley and crank, the pulley will spin on the shaft. If this is the case, the pulley bolt can get loose or the pulley can fail from overheating from the spinning. You might want to investigate this.
