will just a muffler tip fit? our rear section is shaped different than most. i could be completely wrong

If you mean get the muffler only and weld it on, then you'll prolly get a raspy, tingy sound.
You can do different tips (tanabe not one of them) but none will have any effect on sound. The sound comes through the muffler itself.
