    Default Ill Start this off

I was riding along doing 5 over the limit when I glanced into my rearview and what did I spy with my little eye, a red mustang about to fly by. Ok rhymes aside, he was some trust fund moron with more dollars than sense and we took off, in the straights as you can imagine he took a commanding lead but when the road curved hard to the right, I dropped it into third and was gone, he was still trying to figure out how I beat him at the light when he pulled up next to me.

The moral of the story children is this; turns are the great equalizers, im not a great driver or even a good one but because I have basic gear selection skills and a reckless abandon I was able to get away from a car with 4 more cyclinders than me.

Thats what I said, turns are the great equalizer, im not a great driver, but the fact that he couldnt shift under pressure won me the day.

Hey, now. I used to own 2 Mercury Capris (still have 1) that are the super cool half-brothers of the Stangs. I used to drive my Uncle's '66 Stang around but it only had a 200CID scared straight 6. Driver skills does have alot to do with the equation. Not sure what year the Stang was, but Stangs in general do not corner well in stock trim.

Capri is identical to the Stangs from '79-the last year model in '86. They had wider fenders (front/back) than those ugly lips on the Stangs.

Stangs ruled the 80's, 90's. They are fun to drive and have alot of aftermarket support.

I honestly dont mind the new stangs, to me they look good. I just have always lived in military towns, where every guy out of basic thinks his mustang is somehow magically faster then everyone else on the road....I think its more the personality they seem to attract than the car.

Did a short race with a tricked up import bike with atleast upgraded exhaust, extended swing arm, Dunlop tires, etc. This bike was loud and sounded like it had balls (it did). So the guy saw me make a right turn at the light and cam up beside me doing about 40MPH. I dropped it to second and my overloaded clutch held on enough to get me moving. It took him about a second to start leaving me behind which happened quit fast after that. We met up at the next traffic light. He was looking behind him for the popo so I started out regular to see if he would run. He, of course, did so I gunned it a little after him. He promptly walked ( I mean ran) away from me as I bounced off the rev limiter towards 2nd. Caught him at another light and gave him a thumbs up and a "killer bike". He looked backed amazed and said, "Wow, your car is pretty damn fast. Looks clean.". Thanked him and said I could do more but the stock clutch ain't cutting it anymore.

You know its funny you guys mention Mustangs and how most of them act on the streets. I am not a huge fan of them either and the same applies to the Honda's, but I had a guy one night in a fox body stang 83-86 challenge me. I'm just driving home from work a few months ago and I get to a traffic light and he rolls next me and rev's. I looked over at him and acknowledged his presence and turned my sight back to the light. The light on the opposite site tuned yellow then to red and as soon as that happened, I took my left foot off the brake and hit the gas w/ my right foot as was gone. The guy w/ the mustang tried to launch but just roasted his tires and I left him looking at my tail lights. By the time he got going and up to speed, I had a good 5-6 cars on him, but he must've realized I got him and backed off. The mustang he had looked stock, it had no spoiler and the exhaust was tucked underneath by the rear axles. No obvious stickers, cowl induction hood or anything like that, just a simple/clean sleeper. Although I did get a good enough look at the driver and he looked like late 20's early 30's and clean cut. The last thing I remember was looking down at the speedometer doing 75mph in a 30mph zone and then having to slow down because I caught up to another car down the road doing the speed limit. Now I'll admit a N/A tC in a heads up drag race won't beat/smoke a mustang, but as people know its not always the car, its the driver as well that plays a role in a win or loss. Then there are those that think they can drive or shift for that matter and choke. I also get told by quite a few people that an Auto can't beat a Manual, I have raced quite a cars w/ a manual tranny and I know for a fact that line is complete BS. I hate to say this, but a cars computer can shift faster than a human being ever can. If you follow PINKS/Drag Racing, you begin to notice how many guys are getting away from the manual trannys and going w/ auto's. Too many cars are blowing up trannys and doing so much wear and tear that the manuals aren't holding up. Plus the tracks are so sticky, it causes the trannys to break/fail. I know that manuals are more favorable over auto's, but don't knock an auto if it beats you.

Its not even so much that we are " Imports ", but some people give us a bad name. I have seen so many Neon's, Cavaliers, Cobalts that look so ridiculous and all riced out, and not even a fast car to begin w/. I get looks all the time from those cars and some even have the nerve to rev at me. I just look at them, smile and then wave. Since owning my tC, I have been challenged numerous times, once by a neon and by a Cobalt SS. Both races were a total joke and such a waste of gas, but I proved my point and then some. I will admit I have lost a few times as well, but racing cars I shouldn't have messed w/ in the first place: 2 Camaro SS's, Lexus ES 300 and a Mazda MX-6 w/ plenty of boost. Most of the Honda's don't bother me nor am I afraid of them, but they like to rev at me just to make their presence known. I have raced one Integra GS-R (American Version) and was surprised that I beat him. He even shook my hand and said " nice race ", then replied his redline cut off at 7,000rpms. Plus he had over 150,000 miles on his motor all N/A. I tend to race cars/vehicles that are more evenly matched and in the same bracket, which makes for a more fair race. I am not one of those teen-agers that seems to think he can smoke a Vette or something w/ more HP/Torque than what I have, your just asking to get your arse handed to you. Even my g/f has raced several cars and so far hasn't lost a race yet. Both her and I have raced from a dig and we stay right along side one another. I will admith she has about 15 more HP than me and a bit more torque, but her car also weighs a tad bit more than mine. So power to weight ratio we about even.

I will say this much as well, I may own a Scion tC that is mildly modified, but its no where the fastest car on the streets, nor the slowest either. I know how to drive my car and know its limits. I also have no reason to race someone that I know will eat me and spit me out either.

i have not or will ever lose to an of those !@#$ cars. I live in southern utha now since ive been married cause my wife works here and there are so many poser ass (no offense) white boys with tricked out garbage cars and i smash every single one. liek you i raced an integra the other day as well and was surprised to know i won. i thought for sure he would kick my !@# but nope i smoked him. i know for sure he had an exhaust but besides that idk. i know what you mean about racing cars you shouldnt be but its fun none the less. there is a straight away going to my place that has 3 lanes and i got smacked with a new shelby but i beat the accord so im happy. lol

Slush boxes are generally used in drag racing because it can provide quicker shifts and more consistent launch and ET's. Road racing favors the gear grinders due to their capability to take the heat/abuse and the ability to better control RPM's thru gear selection.

Cadence, traction is the name of the game for sure. That Mustang boiling off the tires is definitely driver error. I used to bet V-8 Camaros in the late 80's with my V-6 Mercury Capri in the eighth mile solely from traction where I would hold the brake and run up the RPMs till the tires wanted to spin. Let off the brake and steadily mash the gas pedal for a maximum traction/torque launch. The other guys would keep the car at idle then slam on the gas causing excessive tire spin and no forward movement.
