The new Mazda2 three-door hatchback will make its world premiere at Geneva’s Motor Show in March, marking the first time in the model’s history that a three-door variant is being made available. The latest version will feature the same powertrain lineup as the older five-door – 1.3L and 1.5L petrol engines and a 1.4L turbodiesel – and will offer the same performance and fuel economy as the two cars weigh almost the same.

Like the five-door, the new three-door weighs in at less than 1,000kg and despite the low kerb weight it should still score a 5-Star Euro-NCAP safety rating just as its bigger brother did last December. This latest announcement brings the Mazda2 range to a total of three vehicles, the other two cars being the regular five-door and Chinese market sedan model. Now all we need is the high-performance MPS-Mazdaspeed version.

Mazda will also use the Geneva show for the European debut of the Taiki concept car and next-generation rotary engine, the Mazda5 Hydrogen RE Hybrid and the facelifted RX-8 sports car.
