I just purchased a set of 18" Motegi Racing MR116 matte black five star wheels. Well I have alil money to put into the car but I'm the kind of guy that like to learn to do it myself. That and save myself a few bucks in the process. I was wondering if anyone could help me out and point me in the right direction for a spray gun and paint brand Also relatively inexpensive since I'm no pro and plan on using it only for projects at home. I'm planning to spray the whole car matte black to match the wheels and accent it with a lil red here and there. I'm sure I may be messing it up a few times but I don't mind taking the time to get it done right. So if anyone has suggestions for me that would be great!

You should start at real small. A so-so pneumatic spray gun can be had for about $50. You will want a quality 2-part paint but can start with the Dupli-color brand at Autozone. Get yourself some flat sheet metal from Home Depot or Lowes and use them to practice on in both the horizontal and vertical positions. Once you are proficient, you can move onto the car but should paint a removable body part first to test.

Of course, you are going to need an appropriate place to paint that is clean and that you can control the temp and humidity. It will have to be large enough to fit the car. There will also have to be a place to let the paint dry. Paint and body shops use painting booths and ovens to facilitate a professional finish.

Best to leave it to the pros as it takes more than just the tools. It takes alot of skills and experience. Suggest you try a paint and body trade school. Another alternative to painting is skin wrapz http://www.skinzwrapscom

Thanks for the info. I was planning on starting small and working up to doing thw whole car. I'm fine with my car looking alil mismatched for awhile. I luckily have a perfect set up at my rental with 3 car garage that I can wrap up the walls and ceiling with plastic sheeting. That and I have lots of time to learn. I'm in no rush. I think school might be in my future. I don't wanna do if for a living but it would be nice to know how to do. I like to tinker with stuff and do my own work. it's more enjoyable and I feel like I put more quality and effort in it since its my stuff and I like my stuff to look good. Again thank you for your insight and BTW this website is like a gold mine of info. Never knew it existed till last week!! Love it!!

Thanks. We were established to be a resource for Scion and car enthusiasts. We may not be the most popular, but we try our best to get you the info that you need.

BTW... Those SKinz Wraps can be custom printed and they will sell you the film for DIY. This could save you money and provide you the ability to do a piece at a time.
